چکیده

The cell is a mechanical machine, and continuum mechanics of the fluid cytoplasm and the viscoelastic deforming cytoskeleton play key roles in cell physiology. We reviewmathematicalmodels of intracellular fluidmechanics, from cytoplasmic fluid flows, to the flow of a viscous active cytoskeletal gel, to models of two-phase poroviscous flows, to poroelastic models. We discuss application of these models to cell biological phenomena, such as organelle positioning, blebbing, and cell motility. We also discuss challenges of understanding fluid mechanics on the cellular scale.

Coupling of active motion and advection shapes intracellular cargo transport.

Intracellular cargo transport can arise from passive diffusion, active motor-driven transport along cytoskeletal filament networks, and passive advection by fluid flows entrained by such cargo-motor motion. Active and advective transport are thus intrinsically coupled as related, yet different representations of the same underlying network structure. A reaction-advection-diffusion system is use...

Towards a Universal Constructor IV: Plant Cytoskeletal Pattern Formation

Rather than being ‘random’ viscous fluids, it has been suggested that red cell cytomechanics demonstrate the flows of membrane lipids and the cytoplasm are spatio-temporally organised by convective and shear-driven mechanisms when cells are metabolically active 1-4 . Feedback between the cortical protein and phospholipid was shown to permit membrane flows to dictate the arrangement of cytoskele...

Ballistic intracellular nanorheology reveals ROCK-hard cytoplasmic stiffening response to fluid flow.

Cells in vivo are constantly subjected to mechanical shear stresses that play important regulatory roles in various physiological and pathological processes. Cytoskeletal reorganizations that occur in response to shear flow have been studied extensively, but whether the cytoplasm of an adherent cell adapts its mechanical properties to respond to shear is largely unknown. Here we develop a new m...

Modified mathematical model for variable fill fluid coupling

Variable fill fluid couplings are used in the speed control units. Also, variation in coupling oil volume is used in adapting one size of coupling to a wider range of power transmission applications. Available model for the partially filled fluid couplings, has a good performance for couplings with fixed amount of oil but their performance will be degraded if they are used for the variable fill...

The role of vimentin intermediate filaments in cortical and cytoplasmic mechanics.

The mechanical properties of a cell determine many aspects of its behavior, and these mechanics are largely determined by the cytoskeleton. Although the contribution of actin filaments and microtubules to the mechanics of cells has been investigated in great detail, relatively little is known about the contribution of the third major cytoskeletal component, intermediate filaments (IFs). To dete...
